Glulaminated timber
Glulaminated timber is an extremely strong and
architecturally pleasing feature for prestige projects. Comprising
of timber sections planed and glued together Glulam beams are a
direct replacement for steel and concrete beam systems. Rushmoor
Engineering Services can produce designs for unlimited shapes and
sizes including Portal Frames and curved beams.
A 305mm x 165mm steel 'I' beam has the equivalent
performance to a 550 x 135mm softwood Glulam beam but requires six
times the energy to produce.
Direct cost comparisons show that Glulam timber beams
are competitive with other structural materials and the lower weight
leads to savings on foundations, transport and erection.
| Timber is the only renewable
building material and with planting rates of softwood exceeding
the harvested quantities specifying timber continues to be the
most environmentally friendly way forward. |
